“I live about twelve minutes outside of the city of Bergen, in a place called Sotra. It is super nice, and the closeness to the ocean offers plenty of opportunities. I have my own boat, and sometimes in the summer, me and my friends take the sea route to Bergen. I can’t remember the make of the boat, but it is pretty fast.”
That sounds fun. What else is taking up your time at the moment?
“Right now, I have my final assessments in all subjects. I attend the Bergen Private Gymnasium, and the end of the year means hard work and a lot of pressure. We can be examined in everything we have learned this year.”
What do you like to do when you’re not at school?
“I do freestyle disco jazz, which is a competitive sport. It’s a mix of dance and acrobatics, with a lot of fast beats and loud music, make-up, nerves, and plenty of fun. It’s actually Norway’s most popular dance sport, and I’ve gotten to know many wonderful people in both Norway and abroad. I love spending time with my friends. Sometimes we do stuff, and sometimes we just chill at one of the city’s cafes. And I would lie if I said I didn’t like to shop…”
What is the best thing about living where you live?
“Mainly the beautiful nature, and how varied it is, with both the sea and the mountains. I often go on mountain hikes. For my generation, it is important to show that you are the outdoor type. We get dragged up on the mountains as soon as we can walk fast enough. For a while, I thought it was lame, but now I enjoy spending time in the nature that surrounds me. Also because of the many great Instagram pictures I get.”
If you got visitors from abroad, what would you show them?
“The amazing fjords. And I would show them one of the mountain tops around Bergen, such as Fløyen or Ulriken, so they would get to see Bergen from above. These are things I like myself, so I think it’s fun to show it to others. Also, I’m a bit of an expert on the city’s museums – my dad has taken me to all of the museums in the region ever since I was little. There is a lot of fun stuff to do here for young people, like a zip line, a water park, and a climbing park. And I would of course take them on a guided tour to Bryggen and the fish market.”
Are you active on Instagram?
“Yes, I use Instagram a lot, to showcase both my everyday life and my freestyle dancing. I’ve even got sponsors who give me hair and skin products and clothes. My mum helps me with sorting out what’s okay and not. Instagram can be very inspiring, and you can follow many great accounts. I know that it is a bit superficial, but I like to see all the beautiful pictures people post.”
One final question: What do you think of SKAM?
“It is absolutely fabulous. Some of the themes are a bit extreme, and perhaps not so easy to relate to for us who live outside of Oslo. But when so many people watch a show that deals with things like pressure from all sides, eating disorders, and homosexuality, it does help change things for the better. It makes it easier to talk about difficult things, and maybe also easier for others to understand. It deserves praise for that. And the way it’s done is really cool, with text messages and short videos during the week.”
Skam is a Norwegian teen drama TV series about the daily life of teenagers at the Hartvig Nissen School, a gymnasium in the West End borough of Frogner in Oslo. The series is created by the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK).
